A mother's terrifying ordeal in the heart of Belfast city centre has shocked residents after brazen carjackers targeted her vehicle with her baby still inside.
The incident occurred around 1:30 PM on Donegall Place, one of Belfast's busiest shopping streets, when two assailants approached the woman's car and attempted to force her out of the vehicle.
"She showed incredible courage fighting to protect her child while these men tried to drag her from the driver's seat," said a police spokesperson familiar with the case.
According to eyewitness accounts, the mother physically resisted the attackers, screaming that her infant son was secured in the back seat during the violent struggle. The commotion drew attention from nearby shoppers and business owners, potentially preventing a more tragic outcome.
City Centre Security Concerns
The daylight robbery has raised serious concerns about safety in Belfast's commercial district, particularly for vulnerable residents and visitors.
Police have confirmed they are treating the incident as attempted hijacking and have launched a full investigation. Forensic teams have examined the scene and officers are reviewing CCTV footage from surrounding businesses.
Vehicle Description
The targeted vehicle was described as a distinctive blue Volkswagen Golf that the assailants ultimately failed to steal despite their aggressive efforts.
Detectives are appealing for anyone who witnessed the confrontation or noticed suspicious activity in the Donegall Place area around lunchtime to come forward immediately.
"This was a particularly distressing incident given the presence of a young child, and we're determined to identify those responsible," the police statement continued.
The mother and child, though shaken by the experience, were not physically injured during the confrontation. Support services have been offered to help them recover from the traumatic event.
