The Metropolitan Police have made seven further arrests in a major investigation into a series of arson attacks targeting Jewish community sites across London. These latest detentions relate to an alleged conspiracy to commit an additional arson attack, with the specific target currently undisclosed by authorities.
Escalating Counter-Terrorism Operation
Detectives from Counter-Terrorism Policing London executed the arrests within the past forty-eight hours, significantly expanding what has become a substantial security operation. The arrests occurred across multiple locations, demonstrating the wide geographical scope of the investigation.
On Sunday, three men aged twenty-four, twenty-five, and twenty-six were detained in Harpenden. The following day, Monday, saw a twenty-five-year-old man arrested in Stevenage, while a twenty-six-year-old man and two women aged fifty and fifty-nine were apprehended in a vehicle near Birmingham.
Pattern of Targeted Attacks
Since late March, London has experienced a disturbing pattern of arson attacks directed at Jewish institutions. These incidents have included attacks on Hatzola community ambulances in Golders Green, two separate synagogues, and a former Jewish charity building.
Additionally, authorities are investigating an incident where a drone was flown in proximity to the Israeli embassy, adding another dimension to what appears to be coordinated anti-Jewish activity.
The initial attack on the Hatzola ambulances in Golders Green occurred on March twenty-third, marking the beginning of this concerning series of incidents. Since that date, Counter-Terrorism Policing officers have now made a total of twenty-three arrests in connection with these crimes.
Legal Proceedings and Ongoing Investigations
Of those arrested, eight individuals have already been formally charged with arson-related offences. Thirteen people remain either in police custody or on bail while active investigations continue into their potential involvement in these attacks.
Deputy Assistant Commissioner Vicki Evans, serving as the Senior National Co-ordinator of Counter Terrorism Policing, issued a stern warning to anyone considering involvement in such activities. "We've made very clear that we will be relentless in our pursuit of anyone involved in carrying out or planning these arson attacks," she stated emphatically.
Key Lines of Inquiry
One particularly concerning aspect of the investigation focuses on whether criminal proxies—individuals potentially being paid to commit crimes on behalf of others—may have been utilized to carry out some of these arson attacks. This possibility adds complexity to an already challenging investigation.
"While our investigations into this are still ongoing, my message to anyone even considering getting involved in this type of activity is this, the stakes are high and it is absolutely not worth the risk," Evans cautioned.
The Deputy Assistant Commissioner emphasized that prosecutors would consider offences under the National Security Act, which carries significant prison sentences and lifetime restrictions for those convicted.
Community Protection Measures
Beyond making arrests, Counter Terrorism Policing has deployed additional resources in northwest London to support Metropolitan Police operations aimed at deterring further attacks. These measures are designed to provide reassurance to Jewish places of worship, community centers, and businesses that have felt particularly vulnerable during this period.
"We will not rest until all those responsible for these acts are held to full account," Evans declared, underscoring the police commitment to resolving these cases completely.
The senior counter-terrorism official expressed gratitude for community support during the investigation while urging continued public vigilance. "I would like to thank our communities for their support as we investigate these crimes, and would urge the public to be alert to anything which doesn't feel right and report it to us," she concluded.
