New Year's Eve Terror Threats Force Global Cities to Cancel Celebrations
NYE Events Cancelled Over Terror Threats in Major Cities

Revellers across the globe are facing last-minute changes to their New Year's Eve plans as several major cities have cancelled or scaled back celebrations due to credible terror threats and heightened security fears.

FBI Thwarts Alleged Plot in Los Angeles

The FBI reportedly discovered and thwarted an alleged plot to bomb Los Angeles on New Year's Eve. Authorities arrested four suspects in the Mojave Desert, east of LA, earlier in December. The arrests occurred while the individuals were allegedly rehearsing their plans. Despite this, Los Angeles city officials have not announced any cancellations for their scheduled festivities.

Global Cities Scale Back Celebrations

While Los Angeles proceeds with caution, other international hubs are taking more direct action. In Paris, a concert scheduled for 31 December has been scrapped. This decision followed a direct request from the Paris police prefecture, citing significant security concerns.

Sydney has also altered its plans, ditching a planned pyrotechnics show. This move comes in the wake of the deadly tragedy at Bondi Beach earlier this month, where two terrorist gunmen targeted a Hanukkah celebration.

Meanwhile, Tokyo officials have cancelled the famous scheduled countdown at Shibuya Station. Concerns centred on the massive crowds becoming potential targets for attacks. Authorities were also reportedly worried that such large gatherings could trigger deadly stampedes.

Security Takes Priority Over Celebration

The coordinated response from cities on different continents underscores a heightened state of alert as the year ends. Law enforcement and city officials are prioritising public safety, leading to the difficult decision to call off iconic events. These cancellations serve as a stark reminder of the persistent global terror threat, even during times of public celebration. Travellers and locals are advised to check official announcements for their specific city's plans and any alternative arrangements being made.
