A major explosion rocked the luxury principality of Monaco on Saturday evening, with authorities treating the incident as an attack. Police have launched a manhunt for a suspect who fled the scene after allegedly leaving a backpack containing an explosive device.
Blast Details and Casualties
The explosion occurred on Reverend-Père-Louis-Folla Street at approximately 9pm local time. According to French media outlet BRM, a man placed a backpack in the area before departing. Monaco’s Public Security confirmed that CCTV footage captured the suspect placing the bag, with people entering the vicinity moments before the blast.
At least three people sustained injuries, with two believed to be in serious condition, as reported by AFP. French police have identified confirmed victims as Ukrainian and Russian nationals, according to the Daily Star. The precise number of casualties remains unclear, but authorities have warned that casualties are likely.
Investigation and Suspect Search
Security forces are conducting a manhunt for the suspect, who reportedly fled on foot toward Beausoleil. The Alpes-Maritimes fire service deployed five appliances and fourteen firefighters to the scene as backup. Nice Mayor Eric Ciotti confirmed via social media platform X that the incident is being investigated as a terror attack.
Ciotti wrote: "The attack carried out this evening is a tragedy that strikes Monaco. Thoughts for the victims, their families, and the people of Monaco. Total support for the security forces and emergency services mobilised."

Emergency services responded in large numbers on Saturday evening. Monaco’s Public Security is leading the investigation, with French police assisting. The motive behind the attack remains unknown, and no group has claimed responsibility.
