Serbia has raised its terror threat to the highest level after a knife-wielding attacker was shot dead outside the Israeli Embassy in Belgrade.

Attack and Response

Interior Minister Ivica Dacic said police were treating the incident, which occurred just after midnight on Wednesday, as a “terrorist attack”. The attacker, described by Dacic as a minor carrying two knives, targeted a member of the Gendarmerie while shouting “Allahu Akbar”, meaning “God is great” in Arabic.

The police officer, who was slightly wounded to the face, killed the assailant in self-defence, Dacic added. The attacker was believed to be from the western Serbian town of Sabac.

Heightened Security

The terror threat has been raised to the highest level, and police presence has been stepped up at key locations in the Serbian capital. Police photos from the scene showed the guard’s booth outside the embassy and the area sealed off by police tape, with officers in full gear standing nearby.
