Authorities in Salt Lake City are treating the discovery of a live explosive device attached to a Fox News satellite van as a potential act of terrorism, sparking a major security alert in the heart of Utah's capital.
The chilling incident unfolded on Tuesday afternoon when employees from the news network spotted a suspicious package fixed to the underside of their broadcast vehicle, parked near the city's public library at 210 East 400 South.
Salt Lake City Police Department responded immediately, cordoning off several blocks in the downtown area and evacuating nearby buildings as a precaution. The department's Hazardous Devices Unit was dispatched to examine the suspicious object.
"We can confirm that the device was live and could have been detonated," stated Police Chief Mike Brown during a press conference. "This appears to have been a deliberate attempt to cause harm and instill fear."
The bomb squad successfully performed a controlled detonation of the device at approximately 3:30 PM local time, creating a loud explosion that echoed through the city center but causing no injuries or property damage.
