A 41-year-old woman was brutally gang-raped by 10 men in a horrific attack in Karnataka, southwest India, according to reports. The incident took place on June 3 in a village in the Davangere region, but it remained unreported until June 8, when a video of the assault began circulating in several WhatsApp groups, as reported by the Times of India.
Details of the Attack
The victim stated that she had left home following a domestic dispute and was walking toward her parents' village when two men approached her, offering assistance. They allegedly gave her a soft drink suspected to contain a sedative, after which she lost consciousness. She was then taken to a farm on the outskirts of the village, where other men had gathered. The victim alleged that she was sexually assaulted and filmed while in an intoxicated state.
Police Response and Arrests
After the victim filed a complaint, police arrested all 10 individuals she named. The Davangere Superintendent confirmed that a case was filed under Sections 70 (gang rape), 77 (voyeurism), and 190 (every member of an unlawful assembly guilty of an offence committed in pursuit of a common object) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. He stated, "We have secured all 10 accused in the case. Further investigation is underway."
Investigation and Evidence
Police seized the suspects' mobile phones to trace the video's circulation. The victim underwent a medical examination, and the crime scene was examined for forensic evidence to determine the sequence of events. A police spokesperson confirmed these steps as part of the ongoing investigation.
