A quiet family lunch in regional Victoria has turned into a devastating murder investigation after three people died from suspected mushroom poisoning, with the woman who cooked the fatal meal now at the centre of a police probe.
The Fatal Gathering
On July 29th, Erin Patterson hosted four relatives for what should have been a routine Saturday lunch at her Leongatha home, approximately 135 kilometres southeast of Melbourne. The ordinary family occasion turned catastrophic when three of her guests subsequently died from symptoms consistent with deadly mushroom toxicity.
Victims of the Suspected Poisoning
The tragedy claimed the lives of Gail Patterson, 70, and her sister Heather Wilkinson, 66, both of whom passed away at Austin Hospital on August 4th. Heather's husband, Reverend Ian Wilkinson, 68, fought for his life in hospital for nearly two months before succumbing to his illness on November 3rd.
The sole survivor of the meal, Baptist church pastor Ian Wilkinson, spent weeks in critical condition before tragically losing his battle for survival.
The Surviving Cook Under Suspicion
Erin Patterson, the 48-year-old who prepared the meal, was rushed to hospital with similar symptoms but recovered. She has since been identified as a suspect in the investigation, though no charges have been filed.
Detectives from the Homicide Squad have executed multiple search warrants at Patterson's properties in Leongatha and nearby Wilsons Promontory, seizing electronic devices and other evidence.
Police Investigation Intensifies
Victoria Police confirmed they're treating the deaths as suspicious and investigating whether death cap mushrooms – highly toxic fungi that can be mistaken for edible varieties – were involved in the preparation of the meal.
"This is a complex and thorough investigation," a police spokesperson stated. "We're following all lines of enquiry to determine exactly what occurred during that fatal lunch."
Community in Mourning
The small community of Leongatha has been rocked by the tragedy, with locals describing the victims as beloved members of the community. Reverend Wilkinson served as pastor at Korumburra Baptist Church, where he and his wife were deeply involved in community activities.
