A 16-year-old girl was kept under “digital arrest” for nearly three months by a man who then imprisoned her in a flat of horrors. The 19-year-old attacker raped her repeatedly, whipped her with a leather belt, and inflicted 20 knife wounds, police said.
Control Through Video Calls and Threats
The teenager, who met the girl on Instagram, used constant video calls, phone access, and threats to control her. He ordered her to sleep under her bed and go to her terrace for video calls, warning he would circulate intimate photographs if she refused.
Rescue and Arrest
Police in Nagpur, India, recovered a dog neck strap and belt used in the assaults from two local pet shops. The girl was rescued on August 3 after her parents reported her missing. The accused is in jail in Nagpur.
Rape Statistics in India
India recorded 29,536 rape cases in 2024, according to the latest National Crime Records Bureau figures – roughly one every 18 minutes. The vast majority of accused were known to their victims. Official totals have hovered near 30,000 annually in recent years, though campaigners say widespread under-reporting driven by stigma means the true figure is far higher.
