Teen arrested for secret sex video shared in fraternity chat

A 19-year-old has been arrested after allegedly secretly filming a sex video in a university dormitory and then sharing it in a fraternity Snapchat group chat to "appear cool," according to court documents.

Officials in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, accused Alexander Michael Evanoff of using his mobile phone on September 19 to secretly record a "sexually explicit video" of a woman during a sexual encounter. He then reportedly distributed it without her consent.

Incident at UNCC dormitory

The alleged recording took place inside a Hunt Hall dormitory room at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte (UNCC) on September 19. Police affidavits claim Evanoff filmed the encounter without the woman's knowledge.

Later that same day, he allegedly posted the footage "through a Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity Snapchat group chat containing approximately 32 members," a warrant says. Investigators said the clip came to their attention after two people reported seeing it in the group chat.

Admission and arrest

Court paperwork adds: "Evanoff admitted to recording and distributing the video without requesting (the woman's) permission and acknowledged that its distribution would be embarrassing and humiliating to her." The woman, who court documents say is from Greensboro, told police she confronted Evanoff.

She reportedly asked if he had shared the recording to "appear cool," Fox News reported. "Evanoff reportedly responded affirmatively and apologised," the affidavit states.

Evanoff was arrested and charged with one felony count of disclosing private images and two felony counts of secret peeping, as per Fox News. He was later released after posting a $10,000 bond (£7,700) and is scheduled to appear in court on November 5.

University and fraternity responses

UNC Charlotte confirmed the suspect is not currently a student at the university and condemned the alleged behaviour. A spokesperson said: "The individual who has been charged is not currently enrolled at the University. The alleged conduct in this case, if true, is reprehensible. It is not what we expect or will tolerate from members of our campus community."

University officials added: "All of our cases are evaluated in accordance with applicable university policies. Any student who breaks the law is not only responsible for criminal charges, but may also be subject to the University's disciplinary process, which includes sanctions up to and including expulsion."

Sigma Alpha Epsilon also moved to distance itself from Evanoff, saying he was never formally part of the organisation. Saylor Schwab, assistant director of communications for the fraternity, told Fox News Digital: "The individual is not a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon and was never initiated into the North Carolina Beta Chapter. In September 2026, the leaders of the North Carolina Beta Chapter swiftly acted after learning of the individual's alleged conduct and rescinded his bid for initiation… Sigma Alpha Epsilon condemns any and all forms of sexual misconduct and remains committed to building a culture of True Gentlemen in every chapter."
