A massive police operation is underway in Essex after a convicted sex offender released on immigration bail vanished without trace, prompting urgent public warnings from authorities.
Hadush Kebatu, 28, who was convicted of sexual assault in 2021, was released from custody on strict bail conditions but failed to report to authorities as required. The Ethiopian national, who entered the UK illegally in 2019, has now become the subject of an intensive search across the Epping Forest region.
Police Issue Urgent Public Warning
Essex Police have issued a stark warning to the public not to approach Kebatu if spotted, but to immediately contact emergency services. Detective Chief Inspector James Shirley emphasised the seriousness of the situation, stating the force is using "all available resources" to locate the missing man.
"We have significant concerns about Kebatu's whereabouts and are urging anyone with information to come forward immediately," DCI Shirley told reporters.
Controversial Release Raises Questions
The case has ignited fresh debate about Britain's immigration and offender management systems. Kebatu was released despite his criminal conviction and illegal entry status, raising questions about monitoring protocols for dangerous individuals.
Local residents in the Epping area have expressed alarm about the situation. One community leader, who wished to remain anonymous, said: "People are rightly concerned that someone with this background could disappear in our community."
National Search Operation Intensifies
Police forces across neighbouring counties have been alerted as the search extends beyond Essex borders. Kebatu is described as approximately 5ft 10ins tall with a medium build and black hair.
Authorities are particularly concerned because Kebatu has previously failed to comply with reporting conditions. His disappearance comes amid ongoing discussions about reforming the UK's approach to managing foreign national offenders.
The Home Office has been approached for comment regarding the circumstances of Kebatu's release and the ongoing manhunt operation.
