A science teacher accused of raping his student allegedly told the teenage girl that no one would love her like he did, a court has heard.
Darlington Nuwertey, 32, is accused of taking advantage of the girl after meeting her while he was a teacher at Oasis Academy Silvertown in Newham, east London.
He is on trial at Snaresbrook Crown Court charged with nine counts of rape and one count of being an adult who abused a position of trust by engaging in sexual activity with a girl aged 16 or above.
Police interview footage shown to jurors
The schoolgirl said she was 15 and about to turn 16 when she became aware of Mr Nuwertey’s unwanted attention.
On Wednesday, jurors were shown footage of the complainant’s recorded interview with police.
In the interview, she described one incident during which the defendant is accused of raping her at his house.
Asked by the officer what she thought was going to happen when she went to his house, the alleged victim said: “I think he just told me that he was gonna have sex with me.”
She said that on that day, he told her that if she got “married or I have a boyfriend and like no one will ever love me like he did”.
Alleged classroom and storeroom incidents
Jurors had heard that on one occasion, Mr Nuwertey had pinned the girl against the classroom wall and began kissing her while “forcefully grabbing her breasts over her school uniform”.
It was heard that he was “caught red-handed” by another member of staff who had reported it.
Mr Nuwertey is also accused of raping the girl in a storeroom at the school.
The complainant gave evidence on Wednesday afternoon and was asked about the timeline of events by Mr Nuwertey’s defence barrister Victoria Meads.
The barrister asked the girl if she remembered saying in a police interview that she and the teacher had “moved the meeting to the storeroom after school because of what happened when a member of staff walked into the classroom”.
The girl said: “Not really.”
Ms Meads asked the student if she was making the storeroom incident up, to which she responded: “No.”
Defence challenges complainant’s account
Ms Meads told the complainant during the hearing that Mr Nuwertey “said you were in a relationship together after he left your school”.
The girl said he had “already kissed me before he left the school”.
Ms Meads asked her if she was “lying about that”, to which she responded: “No.”
The lawyer asked the girl if she had told Mr Nuwertey that she was 18 and her parents had lied about her age to get her into school, which she denied.
Referring to one alleged incident at the defendant’s house, the lawyer put to the teenager that “Mr Nuwertey said the first time you went to his address you touched each other sexually”, later adding that there was “no sexual intercourse”.
The alleged victim said: “He was touching me and I told him to stop because I wasn’t feeling comfortable.”
Ms Meads asked the girl why she went to his house, to which she responded: “Like I said, he pressured me to come with him.”
The trial was told that Mr Nuwertey allegedly told the student that he wanted her to carry his baby.
Mr Nuwertey was arrested and in a prepared statement he denied all allegations of sexual activity with a child, denied any sexual contact with the complainant and denied the allegation of rape.
He said their relationship was professional in nature.
Mr Nuwertey, of Bexleyheath, south London, denies the charges.
