'Predatory' Rapist Who Knowingly Transmitted HIV to Victim Jailed for 14 Years in Landmark Case | UK Crime News
Predatory HIV Rapist Jailed for 14 Years

A 'predatory and calculating' rapist has been handed a 14-year prison sentence for a series of horrific offences, including deliberately transmitting HIV to his victim in a case that has sent shockwaves through the community.

Darryll Rowe, 31, was described by a judge at Lewes Crown Court as exhibiting 'deep-seated malignancy' after being convicted of rape, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and intentionally attempting to cause grievous bodily harm.

A Calculated and Callous Campaign

The court heard how Rowe, originally from Edinburgh, engaged in a campaign of manipulation and violence against the victim in Brighton. In a profound breach of trust and consent, he removed a condom during intercourse without the other man's knowledge—a criminal act known as 'stealthing'.

Most disturbingly, Rowe was fully aware of his HIV-positive status at the time and had been advised by medical professionals on his responsibility to prevent transmission. He callously ignored this life-changing advice, leading to his victim contracting the virus.

Devastating Impact on the Victim

The psychological and physical impact on the victim has been devastating. In a powerful statement read to the court, the victim said Rowe had 'taken away my choice, my autonomy, and my health'.

He described the immense trauma of being diagnosed with HIV, a lifelong condition, because of Rowe's deliberate and selfish actions, stating he now lives in constant fear of the health implications and the stigma still associated with the virus.

Police Praise Victim's Courage

Detective Constable Amy Pooley of Sussex Police praised the incredible bravery of the victim in coming forward and supporting the prosecution. She stated: 'Rowe is a dangerous, predatory individual who showed a complete disregard for the wellbeing of his victim. This sentencing reflects the severity of his crimes.'

This case serves as a stark warning that knowingly transmitting a serious disease like HIV is a serious criminal offence in the UK and can result in a substantial prison sentence.
