Michael Thompson, 56, has been found guilty of the rape and murder of his estranged wife, Kimberley Thompson, 43, after staging her death to appear as a suicide at their home in Northampton. The conviction followed a six-week trial at Nottingham Crown Court, where the jury heard that Thompson subjected Kim to years of domestic abuse, including physical violence and coercive control.
Details of the Attack
Northamptonshire Police reported that between midnight and 3:30am on Saturday, August 9, 2025, Thompson entered Kim's bedroom, raped her, and suffocated her. He then staged the bedroom to mimic a suicide, posted messages on her social media accounts, and called East Midlands Ambulance Service at 5:30am. Thompson initially claimed Kim had taken her own life, but family and friends expressed disbelief, noting she had been making plans for the future and had a history of domestic abuse.
A formal murder investigation was launched on August 12, 2025, leading to Thompson's arrest. In addition to murder and rape, he was found guilty of two counts of perverting the course of justice for covering up both crimes.
Domestic Abuse History
The court heard that Kim had contacted a domestic abuse support service in 2013 but withdrew her complaint due to fear. Despite being separated for two years, the couple still lived in the same house on Pinewood Road, Northampton, in separate bedrooms. Thompson's abuse had stripped Kim's confidence, but after separation, she began to re-emerge with renewed enthusiasm for life, according to friends and family.
Detective Chief Inspector Torie Harrison, from the East Midlands Special Operations Unit, led the investigation. She stated: “I hope today provides Kim’s family and friends with some comfort. It became clear throughout our investigation that Kim had been subjected to domestic abuse for much of her relationship with Thompson, with manipulation, coercive control, and physical violence the norm.”
Impact and Aftermath
Harrison condemned Thompson's actions: “Not only did Thompson brutally rape and murder Kim, he took the time to stage her death in order to make people believe she had committed suicide before calling for help. I have no doubt these actions caused further upset to Kim’s loved ones, who have shown an enormous amount of grace and dignity throughout our investigation and during the trial.”
She urged other victims of domestic abuse to seek help, noting that specialist police officers and organisations offer support. “My plea to anyone who finds themself in this situation is to please ask for help, no one will judge you, but we can help you take that first step to becoming safe,” Harrison added.
