A man has been charged in connection with an alleged attempted rape in North Tyneside. Police were called at around 8.45pm on Tuesday, October 27, to a report that a woman had been threatened and then sexually assaulted by a man in the St. Peter’s Road area of Wallsend.
The next day, a suspect was arrested and taken into police custody. Northumbria Police confirmed on Saturday that a man has been charged in connection with the allegation.
Charges and court appearance
Yassim Ahmed, of no fixed address, who identifies himself to be from Western Sahara, has been charged with one count of attempted rape, one count of sexual assault and one count of theft. The 30-year-old will appear at South East Northumberland Magistrates’ Court on Monday, November 2.
Police say a woman continues to be supported by specially-trained officers. The force also urged people not to share unverified information or engage in speculation online.
Appeal for public cooperation
A statement from the force said: "With proceedings now active, detectives are urging the public to refrain from speculation – both online and in the community – which may jeopardise upcoming court proceedings. Officers are also reminding the public that anyone who reports being a victim-survivor of sexual offences has the right to anonymity and should not be identified.
"Investigating officers are aware of misinformation and speculation on social media about this case. With court proceedings now in place, officers would urge people not to share unverified information or engage in speculation online. While this may seem harmless, inaccurate comments and rumours can cause significant distress to those impacted and have the potential to impact ongoing proceedings."
