A criminology lecturer at a British university is under investigation after facing allegations of victim-blaming when they dismissed a student's rape as "a drunken night that ended in sex".
The disturbing incident occurred during a university seminar when the lecturer, whose specialism includes studying sexual violence, made the controversial comments to a student who had disclosed being a rape survivor.
University Launches Urgent Investigation
The institution has confirmed it has initiated a formal investigation into the lecturer's conduct after numerous students complained about the inappropriate remarks.
"We take all matters of student welfare extremely seriously," a university spokesperson stated. "An immediate investigation has been launched, and appropriate action will be taken based on its findings."
Student Outrage and Backlash
Fellow students expressed shock and anger at the lecturer's comments, describing them as "deeply damaging" and "completely unacceptable" from someone in a position of academic authority.
One student present during the incident revealed: "We were all horrified. For a criminology lecturer, who should understand these issues better than anyone, to dismiss rape in such a casual manner was both shocking and terrifying."
Survivor Groups Condemn Comments
Sexual violence support organisations have voiced strong condemnation of the lecturer's remarks, emphasising the danger such attitudes pose to survivors coming forward.
"This is precisely why many survivors hesitate to report sexual violence," said a representative from a leading survivors' charity. "When even educators in relevant fields perpetuate harmful myths, it reinforces the barriers to justice and recovery."
The case has raised serious questions about academic training and the need for better education around sexual violence, even among those teaching the subject matter.
