Joey Barton Hit with Restraining Order After Threatening Ex-England Star Eni Aluko
Joey Barton gets restraining order over Eni Aluko threats

Former Manchester City and Newcastle United midfielder Joey Barton has been handed a restraining order after admitting to sending threatening messages to renowned football pundit and former England international Eni Aluko.

Westminster Magistrates' Court heard how Barton, 41, embarked on what was described as a 'persistent campaign of harassment' against the ITV sports analyst, leaving her genuinely fearing for her safety.

The Disturbing Messages

The court was presented with evidence showing Barton had sent multiple threatening communications to Ms Aluko between December and January. The messages contained what District Judge Samuel Goozee called 'wholly unacceptable' content that crossed the line into criminal behaviour.

Ms Aluko, who earned 102 caps for England and now works as a respected television pundit, stated the messages caused her significant distress and genuine concern for her personal welfare.

Court Proceedings and Sentencing

Barton appeared in court facing a single count of sending a grossly offensive message via a public communications network. The former footballer, who now manages Bristol Rovers, pleaded guilty to the charge.

In addition to the restraining order, which prohibits Barton from contacting Ms Aluko directly or indirectly for the foreseeable future, he was sentenced to a conditional discharge and ordered to pay court costs.

A Pattern of Concerning Behaviour

This case comes amid growing concern about online abuse directed at sports personalities, particularly female pundits and players. Barton has recently attracted controversy for his social media commentary about women working in football media.

The restraining order represents a significant legal intervention to protect Ms Aluko from further harassment and sets an important precedent for dealing with online threats in the sports industry.
