Gisèle Pelicot Recounts Police Revealing Husband's Rape Crimes in New Book
Gisèle Pelicot Details Police Revealing Husband's Rape Crimes

Gisèle Pelicot has courageously recounted the devastating moment a French police officer first revealed her husband's horrific rape crimes, a shocking disclosure detailed in her new book and series of interviews. The landmark 2024 trial, which transformed Ms Pelicot into a global symbol against sexual violence, led to the imprisonment of her husband for orchestrating assaults over nearly a decade.

The Shocking Police Revelation

In extracts published by French newspaper Le Monde, Ms Pelicot revisits 2 November 2020, the day her world irrevocably changed. She accompanied her then-husband, Dominique Pelicot, to a police station after he was caught secretly filming up women's skirts in a supermarket. Completely unprepared, she faced Deputy Police Sergeant Laurent Perret, who gradually explained how the man she described as "a super guy" had made her an unwitting victim of his perversions.

"I am going to show you photos and videos that are not going to please you," the officer warned, as recounted in her book "A Hymn to Life, Shame Has to Change Sides." The first image showed a man raping a woman dressed in a suspender belt, laid out on her side. "That's you in this photo," the officer stated, before showing more photos from a collection Dominique Pelicot had taken over years.

Unrecognisable Victim in Photos

Ms Pelicot writes that she couldn't believe the inert woman in the photos was her. "I didn't recognise the individuals. Nor this woman. Her cheek was so flabby. Her mouth so limp. She was a rag doll," she describes. "My brain stopped working in the office of Deputy Police Sergeant Perret." The officer revealed that fifty-three men had come to their house to rape her, with Dominique Pelicot regularly drugging her food and drink to facilitate assaults by strangers he invited home, all while filming the atrocities.

Landmark Trial and Convictions

The shocking case spurred a national reckoning about rape culture in France. A harrowing trial concluded in December 2024 with guilty verdicts for all fifty-one defendants. Dominique Pelicot and forty-nine other men were convicted of rapes and sexual assaults spanning nearly a decade. Another man was convicted of drugging and raping his own wife with Dominique Pelicot's assistance.

The court found Dominique Pelicot guilty on all charges and sentenced him to twenty years in prison, the maximum possible penalty. This trial, previously confined to French courts, has now gained global attention through Ms Pelicot's public testimony.

Personal Impact and Public Response

Ms Pelicot's daughter initially feared her mother had Alzheimer's before discovering the truth about the drugged rapes. The book serves as both a personal account of survival and a call to action against sexual violence. By sharing her story, Ms Pelicot aims to shift societal attitudes, emphasising that shame should change sides from victims to perpetrators.

Her testimony highlights the profound betrayal by a trusted partner and the traumatic process of uncovering such crimes through law enforcement. The case continues to resonate, underscoring the urgent need for awareness and justice in combating sexual violence worldwide.
