A 9-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a family acquaintance after he stopped her and her 11-year-old brother as they made their way home from school. The incident occurred in the Bhind district of Madhya Pradesh, India, on Tuesday.
Attack details
Police said the girl and her brother were returning from school when the man approached them and offered to give them a lift home on his motorcycle. Instead of taking them home, the family acquaintance allegedly drove towards fields near a canal on the outskirts of their village.
Police said the man then spotted cattle herders in the area and changed direction before taking the children to a secluded cluster of bushes behind the school. It was there that he allegedly attacked the girl.
Brother's intervention
Her brother reportedly tried to intervene and rescue his sister, but the assailant allegedly attacked him. The man then abandoned the children at the scene and fled, according to the information provided.
The girl reportedly lost consciousness following the alleged attack, while her brother managed to make his way home and alert their family. Relatives then rushed to help the girl before taking her, reportedly bleeding, to a local hospital for treatment.
Legal action
Police have since registered a First Information Report (FIR) against the accused under India's Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). A case was also registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
