A former ride operator at Drayton Manor theme park has admitted sexually assaulting 19 young girls while working at the attraction. Josef Luke Hammond, 24, from Birmingham, pleaded guilty to 19 counts of assaulting a girl under 13 by touching when he appeared at Stafford Crown Court on October 12.
Hammond worked as a ride operator at the Tamworth theme park between March and August 2024. He was immediately sent home when a girl came forward and said he had touched her inappropriately.
Police investigation and arrest
Staffordshire Police said Hammond came to their attention in August 2024 when a girl told her parent what had happened. CCTV was reviewed after the incident was flagged with theme park staff, and Hammond was immediately sent home. Police were informed, and Hammond was arrested and brought in for questioning later that day.
Following an investigation, the force discovered Hammond had sexually assaulted 19 victims. Faced with overwhelming evidence, police said Hammond was left with no choice but to admit all of the offences.
Court appearance and sentencing
Hammond has been bailed ahead of his sentencing hearing, which will take place at the same court on December 11.
Detective Inspector Vanessa Furnival, from Staffordshire Police's child protection team, said: “I’d like to recognise the bravery of the victims in this case, who have all shown immense courage in coming forward and supporting us with our efforts to secure this outcome today.
“I’d also like to recognise the rapid response from staff at Drayton Manor, who immediately removed Hammond from his duties.
“While we’re pleased to secure this conviction, we would advise any parents or guardians who think their child may have been a victim to get in touch with the police directly.”
