In a shocking discovery that emerged from one of Bristol's most notorious murder investigations, police uncovered a trove of depraved material belonging to a Colombian national living in the city.
Yostin Mosquera, 23, has been sentenced to two years imprisonment after officers found over 1,000 indecent images of children on his electronic devices. The discovery was made during the high-profile investigation into the deaths of two men whose bodies were found in suitcases in Bristol.
Digital Darkness Uncovered
Bristol Crown Court heard how police examining Mosquera's phone and laptop during the murder probe stumbled upon the disturbing collection. Among the 1,073 illegal images were 134 category A pictures - the most severe classification depicting the worst forms of abuse.
Detectives confirmed that while Mosquera wasn't a suspect in the murders of 62-year-old Albert Alfonso and 61-year-old Paul Long, his digital activities came to light during their thorough examination of electronic evidence connected to the case.
A Pattern of Predatory Behaviour
The court was told that Mosquera had been actively searching for and downloading the abusive material over a significant period. His collection included not just still images but also 47 prohibited cartoons depicting child sexual abuse.
Judge Michael Longman, passing sentence, described the material as "depraved" and noted the significant age gap between the victims and their abusers in the images. He emphasised that those who view such content create demand for the abuse to continue.
Community Impact and Police Response
Avon and Somerset Police have highlighted how this case demonstrates their commitment to pursuing all forms of criminality uncovered during major investigations. A police spokesperson stated: "While our primary focus remains the murder investigation, we will always act on any other criminality we discover during our inquiries."
Mosquera, of Fishponds, Bristol, pleaded guilty to three counts of making indecent images of children and one count of possessing a prohibited image. In addition to his prison sentence, he will be subject to a 10-year sexual harm prevention order and must sign the sex offenders register for the same period.
