Australian man Billy Aspinall, 27, from Coolum Beach, has been arrested in Bali after an alleged public sex act that was caught on CCTV and went viral. He was detained overnight after being identified through facial recognition technology and stopped while trying to board a flight to Brisbane.
Arrest at Ngurah Rai Airport
The arrest took place on Tuesday (25/8/2026) at Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport, according to officials. The man was handed over to Badung Resort Police for further legal proceedings after being secured by immigration inspection officers.
The Ngurah Rai Immigration Office said: “On Tuesday (25/8/2026), B.A. (police used this acronym) was successfully secured by the inspection officer of (immigration checkpoint) Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport while departing for Brisbane.”
Incident details and investigation
The alleged incident occurred on Saturday at about 6.30pm in Tibubeneng village, North Kuta. CCTV footage shows Aspinall and an unidentified woman performing several sex acts next to a residential property. The woman, suspected to be a tourist, is also wanted by police.
The pair were repeatedly shouted at by a local woman who came across them on her way to prayer. The alleged act lasted 15 minutes before both walked away. Police have described the incident as a “reckless act”.
Local response and legal process
In Bali, public sexual intercourse is believed to bring bad energy to a home. In this case, the woman who found the pair was forced to perform a Hindu ceremony after the indecent act.
Authorities believe the suspect, an Australian citizen born in 1998, held a valid visa on arrival. The Ngurah Rai Immigration Office said: “The identity of the female foreigner suspected of being involved is still being investigated by the Police and is currently being pursued by authorities to be held accountable.”
“Immigration has also included B.A. in the Subject of Interest (SOI) list to monitor his movements when crossing through the Immigration Checkpoint.”
North Kuta chief police commander Ketut Sukadana said the alleged “indecent acts have the potential to cause public concern.” He added: “Particularly among the residents of Tibubeneng, and may negatively affect the image of security and tourism in the North Kuta area if the matter is not addressed and handled seriously by taking firm action against the perpetrators, whether under local customary law or national law.”
