Police in Ludhiana, northern India, arrested a man accused of kidnapping a 16-year-old girl and participating in her alleged gang rape after officers were attacked while trying to take him into custody.
Arrest and Resistance
Naresh Kumar was detained during a raid at his home in Basant Nagar, Shimlapuri, on Monday after police received information of his presence. The operation was conducted by officers from Moti Nagar police station with assistance from Shimlapuri police.
According to police, family members initially refused to open the door and then tried to prevent the arrest. A woman allegedly slapped a police constable and abused the picket in-charge, while other relatives reportedly scuffled with officers in an attempt to stop Kumar from being taken into custody.
The Crime
The arrest is linked to a case registered at Moti Nagar police station on July 21 after the victim's mother reported the incident. The complaint stated that Naresh Kumar, Manish Kumar, and Saurav Kumar allegedly abducted the teenager, made her consume an intoxicant, and gang raped her before abandoning her near her home and fleeing.
Despite the resistance, Kumar was arrested and will appear before a court as police seek his remand. Raids continue to trace the two remaining suspects.
Legal Proceedings
Shimlapuri police have also initiated proceedings to register a separate case against the woman and others accused of obstructing public servants during the arrest operation.
