Eight Red Flags Your Partner Might Be Cheating, According to Tracey Cox

Relationship expert Tracey Cox has outlined eight key behaviours that could indicate a partner is being unfaithful. Writing for Mail Online, Cox highlighted signs ranging from sudden phone secrecy to unexplained changes in appearance or routine.

The number one giveaway, according to Cox, is a partner who is glued to their phone and takes it everywhere, even to the bathroom. They may quickly swipe away if you look over their shoulder or leave to delete something. Increased privacy, such as locking the bathroom door when previously it was left open, or becoming 'twitchy' if you sit near them while they work online, are also red flags.

Cox warns that if a partner suddenly stops mentioning a 'friend' at work they used to talk about often, it 'usually means the relationship has moved from an emotional to a physical affair'. Inconsistent or changing stories about their whereabouts can also signal cheating, as research shows memories become less reliable under stress.

Major lifestyle changes, such as hitting the gym five times a week or dressing dramatically nicer, may indicate they are trying to impress someone else. Accidental sexts sent to the wrong person are another classic sign, as are discrepancies revealed by location-sharing apps like Find My Friends. Cox notes that 34 percent of people who caught a partner cheating discovered it through digital means.

Finally, if your partner becomes emotionally distant, it could be because guilt makes it hard to meet your eyes, or their emotional energy is invested elsewhere. Cox explains that withdrawal often occurs when a partner feels their lover is 'sadly lacking' compared to the affair.
