A substitute teacher who abused his position of trust by engaging in sexual activity with a teenage pupil has been handed a prison sentence at Chelmsford Crown Court.
Alley Bardfield, 29, from Great Bardfield in Essex, admitted to two counts of sexual activity with a child while in a position of trust after forming an inappropriate relationship with a 16-year-old student at the secondary school where he worked as a supply teacher.
Systematic Grooming and Abuse
The court heard how Bardfield systematically groomed the vulnerable teenager, exchanging hundreds of messages before the relationship turned physical. The abuse occurred both on and off school premises, with the teacher exploiting his authority to manipulate the young victim.
Detectives from Essex Police uncovered the extent of the relationship after concerns were raised by other staff members. The investigation revealed a pattern of calculated behaviour that spanned several weeks.
Devastating Impact on Victim
In a powerful victim impact statement read to the court, the teenager described how the abuse had "shattered" their confidence and trust in adults. The emotional trauma has had lasting effects on their education and personal relationships.
"The defendant was in a position of authority and trust, which he utterly betrayed," stated the prosecuting barrister. "This was not a momentary lapse in judgement but a sustained period of grooming and abuse."
Safeguarding Failures Under Scrutiny
The case has raised serious questions about safeguarding procedures within the education sector, particularly regarding supply staff. Teaching unions have called for renewed vigilance and improved vetting processes for temporary teaching staff.
A spokesperson for the local authority confirmed that an internal review of safeguarding protocols is underway, stating: "The welfare of our students is paramount, and we are thoroughly examining all aspects of this case to ensure such breaches cannot occur again."
Sentencing and Consequences
Judge Sarah Johnston emphasised the "grave breach of trust" in her sentencing remarks, noting that teachers hold a special position in society and must maintain professional boundaries at all times.
Bardfield was sentenced to three years and four months in prison and will be subject to indefinite notification requirements under the Sex Offenders Register. He has also been prohibited from working with children indefinitely.
The Teaching Regulation Agency is expected to issue a lifetime ban from the profession, preventing Bardfield from ever working in education again.
