Russell Brand has been given a new nickname behind bars after being found guilty of rape and sexual assault. The disgraced comedian, 51, was convicted on Thursday of one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault, and now awaits sentencing on Monday.
Brand placed in solitary confinement unit
Following his conviction, Brand was taken to HMP Wandsworth before being placed in the Care and Separation Unit (CSU), a solitary confinement area known as 'The Block'. As reported by the Mail, this has resulted in Brand being dubbed 'Russel from The Block'.
The Sun also reported that Brand was "petrified" as he was taken to the prison, where the judge in his trial has warned the comedian faces a lengthy custodial sentence.
First night behind bars
His first night meal was reportedly an "inedible" microwaved offering. He was also given toiletries, including a toothbrush and toothpaste, and a food pack including cereal, tea, milk and sugar.
A source told The Sun: "The first night for anyone in a jail is really daunting – and Brand was petrified."
"It will be a massive shock to the system to him and he will be monitored around the clock. All prisoners have to strip off in reception which is humiliating and a real wake-up call."
Monitoring and future transfer
"He will be in prison-issue clothes and given a first-night pack, which will be a world away from what he is used to. All his cockiness will disappear as he takes in his new surroundings."
"But he will be relatively safe and watched around the clock by officers and banged up away from other inmates to start with. Brand will be in London until and after his sentencing but is then likely to be moved somewhere that specialises in sex offenders where he is more out of harm's way."
