Nicholas Brown, 41, of Cardiff, has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for the sexual abuse of a 10-year-old girl, who begged him to stop and cried for her mother during the assault. The abuse occurred more than a decade ago, and Brown was convicted by a jury in 2026.
Abuse Details
At Cardiff Crown Court, the court heard that Brown instructed the victim to strip naked in a menacing tone. He then masturbated in front of her for several minutes as she cried and pleaded with him to stop. Judge Eugene Egan stated: "You were not to be marked by her entreaties and carried on for your insatiate and warped sexual gratification."
The victim froze as Brown kissed her neck and chest, telling her to "relax" before penetrating her with his fingers, causing her to become hysterical. Judge Egan remarked: "It's harrowing to imagine the pleading of that defenceless child."
Threats and Conviction
After the abuse, Brown told the victim: "This stays between us" and warned there would be "trouble" if she told anyone, leading her to believe he would hurt her. A complaint was made to police in 2024. Brown, of Gelynis Terrace, Morganstown, was found guilty of assaulting a girl under 13 by penetration, assaulting a girl under 13 by touching, and engaging in sexual activity in the presence of a child. He has previous convictions for criminal damage and battery.
Victim Impact Statement
In a victim personal statement read by prosecutor Alex Greenwood, the victim said: "The trauma of this experience has shaped my life in the most profound and devastating ways and filled my childhood with fear and confusion for years. I was just a child... I felt shame and completely violated. The silence I was forced to maintain has haunted me for years." She added: "I thought about ending my life in what should have been the happiest time of my life. What he did to me is ever present and affects every thought and feeling I have."
Sentencing
In mitigation, Andrew Davies said his client maintains his innocence, has worked, and has a strong relationship with his partner. He argued: "Custody will have a devastating effect on the defendant." Brown was sentenced to 12 years imprisonment with an extended one year on licence. He was also made subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order and a restraining order for 20 years each, and sex offender notification requirements indefinitely.
