Man jailed for abusive 999 calls and hospital rampage

Adil Sulamen, 38, has been jailed for 13 months after a series of abusive 999 calls and a rampage at a hospital that caused between £5,000 and £10,000 of damage.

On June 26 this year, Sulamen repeatedly called emergency services and verbally abused two different employees. In one call, he told a female operator: "Suck my d*** motherf*****," adding that if she kept ignoring him, he would carry out a sex act on her. Later that day, at around 6.20pm, he called again and told a male operator the same phrase, repeatedly calling him gay.

Hospital incident and threats

The following month, Sulamen was taken to a hospital after being sectioned under the Mental Health Act and brought in by Cheshire Police. After spending the night, he woke up and demanded his phone back, becoming irate and verbally abusing staff. Prosecutor Bethany Lee, at Liverpool Crown Court on October 27, said: "In the morning the defendant woke up and asked for his phone back. The defendant was immediately irate. The defendant called [a nurse] a f***ing b**** and demanded that the phone be returned."

When the phone was returned, Sulamen immediately called the police again, making numerous abusive calls. He dropped his phone, cracking the screen, and told the nurse she "owed him a new iPhone." He also made threats, saying he would wait for the nurse after she finished work and then rape her. He was placed in an isolation room, where he stripped naked, performed a sex act, and caused significant damage by tearing furniture and ripping a sink from the wall.

Custody and sentencing

After being assessed by a psychiatrist and deemed fit for discharge, staff contacted police. In a custody suite, Sulamen was seen making a ligature in his cell. When an officer entered to take it, Sulamen spat on the back of his head. He later became angry when told he could not see a mental health nurse again, becoming abusive.

Sulamen was charged with offences including two counts of malicious communications, three counts of criminal damage, assaulting a police officer, threatening behaviour causing fear of violence, threatening behaviour causing harassment alarm or distress, and assaulting an emergency worker. He denied all offences related to his hospital behaviour but was found guilty following a trial on September 9, which he failed to attend. He pleaded guilty to all other offences.

Callum Ross, defending, said Sulamen had accommodation in Manchester organised by the Home Office, was an Iraqi national and asylum seeker who arrived in the UK in 2024, and was diagnosed with anxiety and depression. He said: "To a degree, one may think this offending speaks for itself in that he was plainly suffering from his mental health at the time." Recorder Eric Lamb sentenced Sulamen to a total of 13 months in prison. As he was led from the dock, he shouted: "You are a motherf*****, judge."
