John Davies, 58, of Winson Green, Birmingham, has been sentenced to 14 years and six months in prison for maliciously wounding a female police officer by scalding her with boiling water, assaulting a second officer, and attacking a member of the public. The incident occurred on an unspecified date at Davies' home on Talbot Street, Winson Green.
Attack Caught on Camera
Two police constables were dispatched to a disturbance at Davies' property where they found him trapping another man against his garden fence. The victim alerted officers that Davies was carrying a knife. When the pair were separated, Davies denied having a blade before throwing the contents of a hot beverage into the man's face. He then struck one of the officers in the face, seized a freshly boiled kettle, and emptied its contents over the other officer.
Injuries and Aftermath
The female officer sustained blistering across her shoulders, back, and neck from the scalding. She was heard telling colleagues: "I need an ambo. I've been scalded with a kettle." Davies was detained and later pleaded guilty to maliciously wounding the PC with intent to resist arrest, assaulting the second officer, and assaulting the man involved in the argument.
Sentencing and Justice
At Birmingham Crown Court on Friday, June 26, Davies was jailed for 14.5 years with an extended licence period of four years. Det Con Manpreet Sidhu, from West Midlands Police's neighbourhood team in Bournville, said: "This was a horrendous attack on two officers going about their duties. You can see from the footage that Davies put up a struggle and it took many officers to restrain him so that he could be brought into custody. One of the officers involved suffered significant injuries and has only recently been able to return to work following this assault. No one should have to face this level of violence simply for doing their job. I hope the sentence delivered to Davies provides some justice for those involved. This will have a lasting impact on the officers but Davies is where he firmly belongs - in prison."
