Killer taxi driver jailed for running over sick passenger

A taxi driver has been jailed for causing the death of a passenger he ran over in anger after the man was sick inside his vehicle. Hayadulla Turkmani, 53, was found guilty of causing death by dangerous driving following a 15-day trial at Basildon Crown Court.

Michael Ashton, 28, was hit by Turkmani's Toyota Prius outside his home in Langdon Hills, Basildon, after an evening out with his girlfriend. The incident happened shortly before midnight on Friday, September 26 last year. CCTV footage played to the jury showed Ashton shouting "whoa, whoa, whoa" moments after arriving home.

Investigation and Arrest

Essex Police launched an investigation after Ashton was taken to hospital in a critical condition. The impact of the collision caused injuries to his leg and brain. He died on Saturday, October 4, 2025.

Detectives established that Turkmani, of Langdale Gardens, Hornchurch, had driven dangerously and collided with Ashton. He was arrested on suspicion of murder and charged on Friday, October 17, 2025. Technical experts worked with police to show Turkmani drove dangerously. He told officers at the scene that Ashton had walked in front of his car, but investigations proved this was not the case.

Trial and Sentencing

Turkmani denied charges of murder, manslaughter and causing death by dangerous driving. The jury found him not guilty of murder or manslaughter but guilty of causing death by dangerous driving. He was sentenced at Basildon Crown Court on Wednesday, October 21.

Detective Inspector Stewart Eastbrook said: "This was a horrific incident. Michael and his girlfriend were returning home after a night out and it was the defendant's job to deliver them home safely. Instead he reacted angrily after Michael became unwell and this escalated into violence and Michael was fatally injured. Michael's family, girlfriend and friends have been left devastated by the needless loss."

Michael's family paid tribute to him, saying: "Michael was the most hardworking, fun, loving, and likeable person that anyone could wish to meet. He was dearly loved by his family, his girlfriend, and the endless list of friends he had. He is also very much missed by his workmates at the London Borough of Barking & Dagenham Council."

They added: "Michael had the most beautiful aura and lit up every room he entered with his handsome looks, his smile, and his warm personality. He was loved by everyone and had such a kind soul - he didn't have a bad bone in his body."
