Baby-killing couple have prison sentences increased by Court of Appeal
Baby-killing couple's sentences increased by Court of Appeal

The Court of Appeal has extended the prison sentences of a couple who murdered their baby son, ruling that the original terms were unduly lenient.

Klevi Pirjani and his wife Nivalda Santos Pirjani were convicted of murdering their 13-week-old son Miguel Pirjani. At their trial in March, Klevi Pirjani received a life sentence with a minimum term of 19 years, while Nivalda Santos Pirjani was given life with a minimum of 15 years.

Details of the Case

On 24 November 2024, Merseyside Police received a report that three-month-old Miguel was found unresponsive at a house in Seacombe. The infant was taken to Alder Hey Hospital, where medical tests confirmed he had a fractured skull and rib fractures.

Despite the efforts of medical professionals, Miguel was pronounced deceased five days later, on 29 November 2024.

Appeal Court Decision

Today, the Court of Appeal, presided over by Lord Justice Jeremy Baker, sitting with Mr Justice Goose and Mr Justice Hillard, stated that the sentences imposed on both offenders were unduly lenient. Consequently, Klevi Pirjani's sentence has been increased to 21 years and six months, while Nivalda Pirjani will serve 17 years and nine months.

Klevi and Nivalda watched the proceedings from HMP Wakefield in Yorkshire and HMP Styal in Cheshire, respectively.
