A woman has died following a serious collision on the M4 motorway near the Prince of Wales Bridge in South Wales. The incident occurred on Sunday evening, prompting a full closure of the motorway between junctions 23 and 24 for several hours while emergency services and investigators worked at the scene.
Details of the Incident
According to Gwent Police, the crash involved two vehicles and was reported at around 6:30 PM on Sunday. Paramedics from the Welsh Ambulance Service attended, but despite their efforts, the woman was pronounced dead at the scene. The next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specially trained officers.
The driver of the other vehicle involved was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. No other casualties were reported.
Road Closure and Diversions
The M4 was closed in both directions between junction 23 (Magor) and junction 24 (Coldra) to allow for collision investigation and recovery of the vehicles. Traffic Wales advised motorists to avoid the area and follow diversion routes via the A48 and A449. The motorway fully reopened by early Monday morning.
Gwent Police are appealing for witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage to come forward to assist with the investigation. Sergeant Amy Goode said: "This is a tragic incident, and our thoughts are with the family of the woman who has died. We are working to establish the full circumstances of the collision and would urge anyone who was in the area at the time to contact us."
Impact on Traffic
The closure caused significant delays on the M4 and surrounding roads throughout the evening, with congestion building on the A48 and A449 as traffic was diverted. Traffic Wales reported long queues, and drivers were advised to allow extra time for their journeys.
The investigation is ongoing, and police have thanked the public for their patience during the road closure.
