Prince Harry is reportedly determined to increase his visits to the United Kingdom, but only if the British government reinstates his security protection. The Duke of Sussex, who now resides in California with his wife Meghan Markle and their two children, Princess Lilibet and Prince Archie, made a brief trip to the UK in July 2026 to mark the one-year countdown to the 2027 Invictus Games. During his stay, he met with King Charles III and Queen Camilla, though he did not see his brother, Prince William.
Security Battle Continues
Since stepping down from royal duties in 2020, Harry has faced a protracted legal battle over his security arrangements. His taxpayer-funded security detail was withdrawn after he ceased to be a working royal. The Duke has argued that his family cannot feel safe in the UK without proper protection, stating that his children cannot “feel at home” there if it is “not possible to keep them safe,” and that he has been “singled out” for “inferior treatment” with his safety, security, and life “at stake,” according to The Independent.
In 2025, Harry lost an appeal against the dismissal of his High Court claim against the Home Office. The Executive Committee for the Protection of Royalty and Public Figures (RAVEC) had decided he should receive a reduced level of security while in the country. Despite this setback, Harry is now planning to lobby the Home Secretary personally to revisit the decision.
Reconciliation Hopes
In a BBC interview in May 2025, Harry spoke openly about his desire to reconcile with his family, saying any reunion would be “in his family's hands” and that “if they don't want that, that's entirely up to them.” During his July 2026 visit, he did meet with his father, King Charles, but not with Prince William, suggesting ongoing tensions.
Harry's legal team has argued that the current security arrangements are inadequate and that he and his family face unique risks. The Duke has previously offered to pay for his own security, but the Home Office has maintained that decisions on protective security are made by RAVEC and are not a matter of personal funding.
