Parents Arrested After 7-Year-Old Dies Weighing 18 Stone

A seven-year-old boy weighing 18 stone died of heart failure, leading to the arrest of his parents on charges of second-degree murder, child abuse, and torture. Casper, from Flint Township, Michigan, stood 4.2 feet tall and weighed more than 18 stone at the time of his death in November, a weight five times the average for a boy his age.

Parents Arrested and Charged

Damien and Jessica O’Brien were taken into custody on suspicion of second-degree murder. Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton stated, “On the face of it, this is cruel and extreme suffering from this child caused by the neglect of the parents. That is obesity. This child did not have a pediatrician, was only taken to the doctor I believe, according to the police report, once.”

The family had health insurance, and the parents even took their dog to the vet on the morning Casper died, highlighting the extent of neglect. The couple also has a five-year-old daughter, who was not enrolled in school. Child Protective Services had no knowledge of the children’s existence.

Hoarding Situation and Landlord Concerns

In November, the landlord attempted to enter the home due to concerns but was refused entry by the parents. Police described the interior as a hoarding situation. The children were not attending school, and authorities were unaware of their circumstances until the boy’s death.

The case has sparked outrage and raised questions about systemic failures in child protection. Prosecutor Leyton emphasized the severity of the neglect, noting that the child’s extreme obesity was a direct result of parental inaction. The investigation continues as the parents await court proceedings.
