A suspect has been identified in the parcel bombing that wounded a sanctioned Ukrainian-born oligarch in Monaco, according to sources close to the investigation.
Attack Details
The victim, identified as Viktor Pinchuk, was injured on June 28 when a package delivered to his residence exploded. Pinchuk, a billionaire with close ties to former Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma, has been under EU sanctions since 2022 over his alleged support for Russian interests.
Monaco police have not released the suspect's name but confirmed that an arrest warrant has been issued. The suspect is believed to have fled the principality shortly after the attack.
Investigation Progress
Investigators are examining forensic evidence from the package and reviewing CCTV footage from the area. A source told AFP that the device was sophisticated and designed to cause serious injury.
Pinchuk remains in hospital in stable condition. His spokesman declined to comment on the investigation.
Background on Victim
Pinchuk, 63, made his fortune in the steel and energy sectors. He is a major art collector and philanthropist but has faced scrutiny over his business dealings. The EU sanctions freeze his assets and ban him from entering member states, though Monaco is not an EU member.
The attack has raised concerns about security in Monaco, a tiny principality known for its low crime rate. Police have increased patrols around high-profile residents.
