NHS Fraudsters Received Over £500,000 in Legal Aid
Four NHS fraudsters, already rich from their IT careers, managed to get more than £500,000 from the public purse to defend themselves in court. They had stolen over £6 million of taxpayers' cash meant for the NHS. Unbelievably, they continued to receive legal aid funding when they appealed and got considerable time knocked off their jail sentences.
Peter Murrell Also Received Taxpayer-Funded Legal Aid
This comes weeks after it was revealed that Nicola Sturgeon's estranged husband, Peter Murrell, also received taxpayer-funded legal aid in his case, where he pleaded guilty to stealing £400,000 from his own party.
Call for Greater Scrutiny
Labour's Jackie Baillie called the public funding of the NHS fraudsters' legal defence a "shocking waste of public funds." Record View says it's time for greater scrutiny when dishing out legal aid. Those who genuinely need it should always receive it, but those with fortunes in the bank should pay their own way.
