Former pop star Gary Glitter, whose real name is Paul Gadd, has been charged with four sexual offences against a girl dating back to 1978, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) confirmed on Thursday.
Details of the Charges
The charges relate to offences alleged to have been committed nearly 50 years ago. The CPS authorised the charges following a review of evidence submitted by police. Glitter is expected to appear in court at a later date.
A CPS spokesperson said: "We have authorised charges against Paul Gadd, also known as Gary Glitter, for four sexual offences against a girl dating back to 1978."
Background of the Case
Glitter, who was a prominent figure in the glam rock era of the 1970s, has a history of convictions for sexual offences. In 2015, he was sentenced to 16 years in prison for sexually abusing three schoolgirls between 1975 and 1980. He was released from prison in February 2023 after serving half of his sentence.
The new charges add to his criminal record and mark a further development in his legal troubles.
Impact and Next Steps
The case has drawn significant attention due to Glitter's notoriety and the historic nature of the allegations. Legal proceedings will now follow, with the defendant entitled to a fair trial. The CPS emphasised that criminal proceedings are active and that the defendant has the right to a fair hearing.
