The case against a former Salford City Council worker has been adjourned while Crown lawyers carry out a review of the matter. Ameen Hadi, 60, has been charged with common assault following an alleged incident in Piccadilly Gardens.
Mr Hadi, who was employed as a community youth worker, was due to appear at Manchester Magistrates Court on Monday (October 12). The charge relates to an alleged incident on March 8 this year, when newly elected Green MP for Gorton and Denton, Hannah Spencer, was speaking at a rally.
Background and roles
Mr Hadi has held several positions in the Salford City UNISON branch over the last two decades. He is also the Chair of North West TUC Black Workers' Committee and the Trade Union officer for Greater Manchester Stand Up to Racism.
Trade unionists and anti-racist campaigners had intended to demonstrate outside the court in support of Mr Hadi.
Court proceedings
Last week Greater Manchester Police said: "We can confirm that we have charged a man with assault and he is due to appear at Manchester and Salford Magistrates on Monday October 12."
But a spokeswoman for the Crown Prosecution Service confirmed that the case has been adjourned for a review and that the next scheduled court hearing was January 14th.
Mr Hadi left the Council in August under a long-standing flexible retirement agreement made in 2023.
