Court Proceedings Begin
The prosecution opened its case against the 30 defendants at Cardiff Crown Court on Monday, detailing the events leading up to the riot in Ely. Approximately 150 people participated in the riot, which involved hours of violence and vandalism on and near Wilson Road.
Background of the Tragedy
The mothers of the two teenagers attempted to reach their children, grief-stricken and desperate, but their path was blocked by police. Shortly after the collision, large crowds from the close-knit Ely community gathered to witness the unfolding horror. Kyrees Sullivan, 16, and Harvey Evans, 15, were killed while riding an electric bike through the streets of Ely in Cardiff. They were involved in a fatal collision and were later pronounced dead at the scene.
Outburst in Court
During the sentencing hearing on Monday, the prosecution recounted accounts from police officers who attended the scene of the riot that night. One of the defendants, Ryan Knight, 21, of Splott, shouted from the dock: “What about Harvey and Kyrees? I haven't heard their names once.” Judge Lloyd Clarke ordered him to be taken to a cell.
