Police have named the victim of a fatal stabbing at Edinburgh's Banana Flats as 35-year-old Barry Gilgun. He was found with serious injuries outside Cables Wynd House in Leith around 9:45pm on Sunday, July 5, 2026.
Emergency Response and Arrest
Emergency services, including Police Scotland and the Scottish Ambulance Service, responded to reports of a disturbance. Gilgun was rushed to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh but died shortly after arrival. A 33-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with the death. He is scheduled to appear at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, and a report will be sent to the Procurator Fiscal.
Scene and Investigation
Images from the scene show multiple police cars and a large cordon. Armed officers and a forensic team were present outside the building, known as the Banana Flats due to its curved architectural design. Henderson Street was also cordoned off and closed to traffic.
A Police Scotland spokesperson stated: "A 33-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with the death of 35-year-old Barry Gilgun in Edinburgh. Barry was found with serious injuries following a disturbance outside Cables Wynd House in the Leith area of the city on Sunday, 5 July, 2026. He was taken by ambulance to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, where he died a short time later."
Transport Disruptions
Lothian Buses confirmed diversions for services 16, 17, 34, 35, 36, N16, and N35, which were redirected via Great Junction Street and North Junction Street. The Shore and Commercial Street stops are not being served.
