A devastating military plane crash in Colombia has claimed the lives of at least 66 soldiers, with dozens more injured, after the aircraft went down shortly after takeoff in an Amazonian province bordering Ecuador and Peru.
Details of the Tragic Incident
The crash occurred on Monday, March 23, in Puerto Leguizamo, a remote town in the Putumayo department of southern Colombia. According to official reports, the military transport plane was carrying 128 people, predominantly soldiers, when it experienced a catastrophic failure approximately two kilometres from the airport.
Official Statements and Response
General Hugo Alejandro Lopez Barreto, head of Colombia's armed forces, confirmed the tragic toll, stating, "Sadly, as a consequence of this tragic accident, 66 of our military elements died." He emphasised that there were no immediate indications of an attack by illegal armed groups, suggesting this was an accident rather than a deliberate act.
Defence Minister Pedro Sanchez revealed on social media platform X that the aircraft was transporting troops to another city within Putumayo when the disaster struck. The commander of Colombia's air force, Carlos Fernando Silva, noted that while specific details remain unclear, the plane "had a problem and went down" near the airport.
Rescue and Medical Efforts
Emergency response teams, including soldiers and local rescuers, rushed to the crash site where thick black smoke billowed from the wreckage. Images from Colombian media showed a field engulfed in smoke as military vehicles hurried to the scene.
The injured were initially treated at only two small clinics in Puerto Leguizamo before being airlifted to larger cities for more comprehensive medical care. The bodies of the victims have been transferred to the town's morgue, while four military personnel remain missing as search operations continue.
Geographical and Logistical Challenges
Puerto Leguizamo's location in the Amazonian region of Putumayo, which shares borders with both Ecuador and Peru, presented significant challenges for rescue operations. The area's remote nature and limited infrastructure complicated immediate medical response and recovery efforts.
This tragic incident highlights the risks faced by military personnel during transport operations in difficult terrain. As investigations proceed to determine the exact cause of the crash, Colombia mourns one of its deadliest military aviation accidents in recent years.
