General Hugo Alejandro Lopez Barreto, head of Colombia's armed forces, confirmed the tragic toll, stating, "Sadly, as a consequence of this tragic accident, 66 of our military elements died." He emphasised that there were no immediate indications of an attack by illegal armed groups, suggesting this was an accident rather than a deliberate act.
Defence Minister Pedro Sanchez revealed on social media platform X that the aircraft was transporting troops to another city within Putumayo when the disaster struck. The commander of Colombia's air force, Carlos Fernando Silva, noted that while specific details remain unclear, the plane "had a problem and went down" near the airport.
