Estate of Buffy Star Nicholas Brendon to Pursue Legal Action Posthumously
Legal representatives for the late actor Nicholas Brendon have announced their intention to continue litigating a breach of contract lawsuit that the Buffy the Vampire Slayer star was involved in at the time of his death at age 54. The case centers on a dispute with Stephen Britton, an Ohio-based contractor, whom Brendon had sued for over $121,000 regarding construction work on his Ohio home.
Allegations of Hostile Work Environment and Unpaid Debts
According to legal documents reviewed by US Weekly, Brendon expressed dissatisfaction with Britton's construction services, claiming poor workmanship. In response, Britton filed counter-allegations in December 2025, stating that the late actor exhibited volatile behavior, including cursing at construction workers and throwing projectiles at them.
Britton further detailed in court filings that workers felt unsafe due to accessible weapons, such as axes, in Brendon's home. He asserted, 'I became worried for my safety and my workers’ safety' as a result of what he described as the actor's mercurial temperament.
Amid the escalating conflict, Britton alleged that Brendon placed an Apple AirTag in his work bag to track his movements, a claim Brendon denied. Britton told the court, 'I’ve never had this happen to me before, and it was alerted for probably three days prior that my iPhone picked it up.' He expressed fear for his life, questioning, 'To be able to go there and work, to be able to get a job done, to worry about weapons and axes that are going to get - you know, am I going to get a plate thrown at me?'
Financial Claims and Legal Continuation
Brendon's lawsuit sought $121,260, including interest, alleging that a $20,000 loan provided to Britton was never repaid. Despite Brendon's passing, his attorneys have indicated that his estate will appoint a representative to see the case through the legal system. They emphasized Brendon's denial of the threats, with his lawyer stating, 'He’s a very calm, relaxed, individual with lots of physical problems and is not threatening in any way shape or form.'
The Daily Mail has reached out to both Britton and Brendon's representatives for further comment on the ongoing legal matter.
Remembering Nicholas Brendon
Brendon's family announced his death last Friday, attributing it to natural causes while he slept. In a social media statement, they said, 'We are heartbroken to share the passing of our brother and son, Nicholas Brendon. He was passionate, sensitive, and endlessly driven to create. Those who truly knew him understood that his art was one of the purest reflections of who he was.'
Best known for his role as Xander Harris on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Brendon's passing has been mourned by colleagues. His co-star Sarah Michelle Gellar described it as tragic and premature, noting, 'It's a tragedy when you lose anyone at any point. It's a bigger tragedy when you lose someone way sooner than needs to be.' She praised his legacy, saying, 'He brought so much joy to so many people on that show, and that lives on.'
