Ann Widdecombe Death: Man Released, No Longer Suspect

Devon and Cornwall Police have confirmed that a 26-year-old man arrested on suspicion of murdering former MP and MEP Ann Widdecombe has been released from custody and is no longer a suspect in the investigation. The man was taken into custody on Friday but was released on Saturday after police determined he was no longer linked to the case.

Circumstances of Death

Ann Widdecombe, 78, was found dead at her home in Haytor on Dartmoor on Thursday, having sustained serious injuries. She served as a Conservative MP and prisons minister before becoming a Brexit Party MEP and later a spokeswoman for Reform UK. Her death has prompted a major investigation by Devon and Cornwall Police.

Police Statement

Assistant Chief Constable Matt Longman stated: “Our priority remains identifying those responsible and ensuring that all available evidence is thoroughly examined. Detectives continue to carry out numerous enquiries as part of the ongoing investigation and we remain committed to establishing the full circumstances surrounding the incident.” He noted that the investigation is “moving at a significant pace” and that all necessary resources are being deployed.

Appeal for Information

Longman appealed for anyone with information, however insignificant it may seem, to come forward. He urged the public not to speculate on social media, as it could harm the investigation and cause distress to Widdecombe’s family. The family has requested privacy as they grieve. A Major Incident Public Portal has been set up for submitting information, images, or footage, and anonymous tips can be made to Crimestoppers.

Ongoing Investigation

Police have not released further details about the nature of Widdecombe’s injuries or potential suspects. The investigation continues, with detectives pursuing multiple lines of enquiry. Authorities have not disclosed whether any other arrests have been made.
