Murderer and violent offender on run after escaping prison on New Year's Day
Two inmates on run after escaping HMP Leyhill

Police are urgently searching for two dangerous inmates, including a convicted murderer, who escaped from a South Gloucestershire prison on New Year's Day.

Details of the escaped prisoners

Matthew Armstrong, aged 35, was convicted in 2009 for a murder committed during a robbery in Warwickshire. He remains at large alongside Daniel Washbourne, 40, who has previous convictions for violent offences and false imprisonment.

Authorities believe the pair absconded from HMP Leyhill, an open prison, between 5pm and 8pm on Thursday, 1st January 2026. The escape triggered a major manhunt across the region.

Police appeal and one arrest made

Avon and Somerset Police have issued a public appeal for information regarding the whereabouts of Armstrong and Washbourne. The appeal came after a significant development on Saturday.

A third inmate, suspected of absconding at the same time, was arrested in Bristol earlier on Saturday, 3rd January. This arrest has intensified efforts to locate the two remaining fugitives.

Public warned not to approach

Police are urging members of the public to be vigilant but to avoid approaching the men if seen. Instead, they should immediately call 999, quoting the relevant reference number.

The escape from HMP Leyhill raises serious questions about security procedures at the facility, especially concerning the management of inmates with convictions for serious violence. An internal investigation is likely to follow the recapture of the individuals.

The search operation continues across South Gloucestershire and the wider Avon and Somerset area as authorities work to return both men to custody.
