The inmate who allegedly attacked child killer Ian Huntley in prison has been identified as Anthony Russell, a triple murderer serving a whole-life order. Huntley, 52, who murdered schoolgirls Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman in 2002, was left in critical condition after the assault at HMP Frankland on Thursday.
Russell, 43, is said to have used a metal bar from a recycling area to strike Huntley three times in the head. Witnesses reported Russell declaring, 'I've done it, I've killed him,' as he was led away. The attack occurred in the segregated wing where Huntley was working in waste management.
Russell was jailed in 2022 for the murders of Julie Williams, her son David, and Nicole McGregor, who was five months pregnant at the time. He strangled McGregor after she showed him a baby scan image, and her body was found dumped in woodland. The judge described his crimes as 'sustained and brutal'.
Huntley has been attacked multiple times in prison, including having boiling water thrown over him in 2005 and being slashed in the throat in 2010. The Prison Service confirmed the incident and said it would be inappropriate to comment further while Durham Constabulary investigates.
