Brittany Zamora, a former teacher jailed for raping a 13-year-old student, has started a new job behind bars – tutoring other inmates. She has also gained a new qualification while serving her 20-year prison sentence.
Tutor certification and new role
Zamora was awarded a tutor certificate in September 2021 and is now authorised to help teach academic subjects to other inmates, according to the Arizona Department of Corrections website. The department stated Zamora does not have any disciplinary issues and has “assisted the education staff in teaching the inmate students, in a group setting.”
Abuse uncovered in 2018
The abuse was uncovered in 2018 after the child’s stepmother noticed the boy, 13, was receiving inappropriate messages from his sixth-grade teacher. The stepmother confronted the child about the texts, leading the teen to admit he was being sexually abused. Zamora was jailed in 2019 after pleading guilty to sexually abusing the boy.
The abuse took place while Zamora was a sixth-grade teacher at Las Brisas Academy in Goodyear, Arizona. Two years before her arrest, she was awarded “Teacher of the Year” at Littleton Elementary School in Avondale.
Details of the crime
Police said Zamora played educational videos to the rest of the class while she abused the 13-year-old at the back of the room. The abuse also occurred in her car. One text message Zamora sent to the victim read: “I want you too baby so bad…I want you every day with no time limit.”
Zamora is set to remain in prison until her release date in March 16, 2038.
