BSN Group Construction, the contractor believed to be employing the man, also issued a statement: “We are saddened to confirm that a person has died following an incident at our construction site at Birmingham Children’s Hospital on Friday, 10 July. Our thoughts are with their family, friends and colleagues at this extremely difficult time. We take health and safety very seriously, and we are assisting the police, the Health and Safety Executive and all relevant authorities with their enquiries. As investigations are ongoing, it would not be appropriate to comment further at this stage.”

Police Response

A West Midlands Police spokesperson said: “We were called to Birmingham Children's Hospital after a man is understood to have fallen from the building at just before 9.50am today (10 July). The man was sadly confirmed dead a short time later and our thoughts are with his loved ones. We are liaising with the Health & Safety Executive as enquiries continue.”

Context

The tragedy occurred a day after Prince Harry visited the hospital during his tour of the region, ahead of the Invictus Games scheduled in the city next year. The hospital is currently undergoing construction work as part of ongoing development projects.
