Police Scotland manhunt for inmate James Fitzpatrick

A major police operation is underway across Ayrshire after a prisoner failed to return to jail following an authorised day out. James Fitzpatrick, 36, was reported missing to Police Scotland on Tuesday, 30 December 2025, after he did not come back to HMP Castle Huntly.

Extensive Searches Underway

Officers are conducting what they describe as "extensive enquiries and searches" to trace the absconder. Fitzpatrick was last seen in Irvine town centre at around 11.20am on Monday, 29 December. He is believed to have boarded a bus travelling in the direction of Ardrossan.

Fitzpatrick is known to have connections to the Ayrshire area, which is a key focus for the search teams. Police are urging anyone who may have seen him or who has information on his current whereabouts to come forward immediately.

Public Warning and Description

In a stark warning, Police Scotland has advised members of the public not to approach Fitzpatrick if they see him. Instead, they should contact the authorities straight away.

The force has issued a detailed description of the wanted man to aid the public:

  • Appearance: White, approximately 5ft 8in tall, stocky build, with short brown hair.
  • Clothing: Last seen wearing a black Nike tracksuit with white stripes down the arms and legs.
  • Bags: He was carrying a distinctive yellow JD Sports carrier bag and a black holdall.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland reiterated the appeal for information. "Anyone with any information is asked to contact 999, quoting reference 2717 of Monday, 29 December," they said.

Alternatively, information can be passed anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. The manhunt continues as police work to locate the prisoner and return him to custody.
