An inquest into the death of a prisoner at HMP Parc in Bridgend has heard that his death was not drug-related. Justin Lewis, 29, was found dead in his cell by prison officers on 16 March.
Lewis is one of six inmates who died at the prison between 27 February and 19 March. Four of those deaths are believed to be linked to a powerful synthetic opioid called Nitazene.
At Pontypridd Coroner's Court, usher Beverly Morgan read a brief report stating that officers entered Lewis's cell to administer medication and discovered his body at 16:56 GMT on 16 March. His body was formally identified by a family member on 21 March.
Assistant coroner Rachel Knight adjourned the inquest, estimating it would resume in six months. The Prisons and Probation Ombudsman is investigating the incidents.
HMP Parc, a category B local prison, opened in November 1997 and held 1,612 inmates at the time of its 2019 inspection, making it one of the largest prisons in the UK.
