Murderer and inmate on run after prison escape

Two inmates, one a convicted murderer, are the subject of a major police manhunt after escaping from an open prison on New Year's Day.

Details of the Prison Escape

Matthew Armstrong, 35, and Daniel Washbourne, 40, absconded from HMP Leyhill in Gloucestershire on 1 January. The pair have been on the run since fleeing the Category D open prison, prompting a widespread search by authorities.

CCTV Sightings in Bristol

Officers have released new information, stating that two men matching the descriptions of Armstrong and Washbourne were captured on CCTV in the Ashley Road area of Bristol at approximately 10.35am on Saturday. Further footage from Sunday morning shows a man walking along Filton Road and then Gloucester Road North in Filton between 9.35am and 9.45am.

Criminal Backgrounds of the Escapees

The public is urged not to approach the men. Matthew Armstrong is serving a sentence for murder after killing a man in Warwickshire. His accomplice, Daniel Washbourne, has previous convictions for serious offences including false imprisonment and violence against a person.

Avon and Somerset Police, who are leading the search in the Bristol area, have confirmed the arrests. This remains a developing story, and further updates are expected as the investigation continues.
